Ritual to Honor My Grandmother Babcock

My grandmother and I had a difficult relationship and if I’m really honest with myself, I acknowledge that she had a difficult relationship with most folks. As I get older and reflect on her life, I have realized that she had an undiagnosed mental illness and she probably coped the best she could.  She and my mother had a very sick and codependent relationship.  She gave away my mother’s wedding gifts to her son (my mom’s brother) because he got married around the same time and apparently needed them more, she gave my brother and I cheap junk from the dollar store for Christmas while my cousins got expensive gifts.  And she played games with money by rewriting her will to whoever was in favor.

I saw my mother chase after the cruel woman my entire life.  My grandmother would treat my mother like garbage, my mother would swear she was going to have nothing to do with her, and my grandmother would have a crisis and my mother would go running.  I grew up believing that no matter how bad you were treated, you had a duty and an obligation to take care of family.  It’s no wonder that I grew up and became a codependent.

My grandmother was shuffled from nursing home to nursing home as her head games and violence caused her to be kicked out of multiple homes.  She finally ended up the same nursing home as my father and my poor mother struggled to take care of them both.  I said my goodbyes to her before she died more out of duty than any sense of love or loyalty.  When she died, I honestly felt relief more than grief.

It was only when my daughter was diagnosed with bipolar and started to exhibit questionable behavior that I began to wonder if my grandmother had had undiagnosed mental illness that caused her to behave cruelly to others.  I knew she had been trapped in an unhappy marriage and my emotions shifted from anger to more sympathy and I began to think about honoring her rather than dishonoring her.  I set about finding photos, a copy of her obituary, and anything else I could gather.  I also pulled the Queen of Pentacles from the Art Tarot deck, which quoted Mohammed, “Riches are not from an abundance of worldly goods, but from a contented mind.”  And I said a quick prayer asking that she find contentment in the afterlife.

The next step was to write her a quick note thanking her for being a part of my life and as I wrote the words, I found that I truly meant them because I had learned lessons from having her in my life.

Dearest Grandmother,

Thank you for being part of my life.  I am sorry for all your struggles and I wish you would have had access to the treatments that Cam has access to.  I honor you for being part of my life.

I then lit a candle and asked for her guidance:

How do you feel about me?

She responded with the Ace of coins.  “You are successful and you make a lot of money and you’re smart with your money.  You also don’t use it as a weapon, but a tool.”  She also told me that I did not need to buy affection.  This was an amazing read because my grandmother respected people with money and I appreciated the fact that she acknowledged I did not use it as a weapon.  The guidance that I did not need need to buy affection made me cry because I’ve spent a lot of time and money in my life placating people and trying to get them to love me because I never felt I was worthy of love.

What guidance can you give me?

She responded with the Page of Wands.  :/”Let go of the anger and cynicism and open your heart and let people in.  Accept that people are imperfect, but that does not mean they are untrustworthy, but that they are human.”  This was more very sound advice and it mirrored the advice that my father gave me when I did an ancestor reading for him.

How can I learn from your life?

She responded with the Eight of Swords.  “Do not stay trapped by your own miserly.  I should have chosen to walk away.  Everyone would have been happier if I would have chosen to live life on my terms”  That was an amazingly telling statement as I knew my grandparents were unhappy, but I grew up sheltered and believing that divorce was not an option.  In a lot of ways this carried over into my own marriage and in some ways I became a clone of my grand and was so angry and hurt that I was hateful and mean to everyone.  The difference is that I was aware of my bad behavior and course corrected.

Overall, this was a very insightful reading and while I’m not sure whether it is realistic to think my grandmother has evolved that much in the 10 years she has been gone, the guidance was good and made sense to me so I will take it and reflect upon it.

Shadow Work-Day 20

What pare of my shadow do I need to use less?
Warrior Two is the card of power awakening and although power awakening is a a really good thing, it can also be a little overwhelming.  I now that I can overwhelm people sometimes with my attitudes, my thoughts, and my power and while I will never choose to be less than again as I was with my ex, I will choose to listen more and talk less.  I’m learning that sometimes raw power needs to be moderated and dialed back to enable and support people versus overwhelming them.
Warrior Two gives me the gift of courage and helps me to jump into the middle of new situations and make my way to the other side.  However, courage is something else that can be scary for other people especially if I set the expectation that I think they are a wuss if they do not have the same level of courage that I do.  This is something else I need to moderate and practice holding people’s hands and guiding them versus pushing them off a cliff.
The Hermit tells me that I love to retreat into myself and shut people out.  That is intimidating for people and people often take it personally.  In reality, it is not meant personally it is just me needing my personal space and doing what I can to protect and care for myself.  One of the things I can do to take care of myself better and not put up the huge shields is make sure I take care of myself all along and not let myself get so run down that the only way I can recover is to isolate myself.
This was an incredibly powerful reading and although it is a great reminder that I am a very strong and fierce person, it is also a reminder that sometimes there is strength in dialing back our capabilities.

Shadow Work–Day 15

How do I stop my shadow from stifling relationships?

The Fool is almost too cliched in this reading as he is telling me that I have to take a leap of faith.  I cannot stay in the safety of my own head.  I have to leap out and take risks and meet people.  I also have to trust that even if things don’t go as I would like, that there is a plan and that the divine has my back.

The choice is mine, according to Dreamer Two.  I can choose to stay in the darkness and be alone or I can choose to venture out into the sunshine and make friends and have relationships.  I can’t blame anyone else for my being lonely if I am choosing to be alone.

Maker Prince brings it home by telling me I can find the gift of connection if I follow the advice of the Fool and Dreamer Two.  I will make friends and I will find the love I am looking for if I am courageous enough to step outside my comfort zone.

And I normally pull three cards, but a fourth card was a tagalong with the Maker Prince and I could not resist turning it over.  It was Warrior Princess, the gift of courage.  This is spirit’s way of telling me that I will be given the courage I need to step outside my comfort zone.

Serenity can be an easy concept to grasp, but a hard emotion to master.  As I’ve been doing more and more lately, I turned to my Tarot cards to help me figure out how to have serenity in my life.

The opportunity to slow down and take my time instead of rushing full steam ahead.  Although rushing full speed ahead is exciting, it doesn’t give me the opportunity to be thoughtful and methodical.
Card 2–What in my life can’t I change?  What are the things I have to accept?
Moon
My intuition and my connectedness.  Even though I sometimes try to disconnect, the connection is always there and when I am out of alignment, I feel it.  I also can’t change that there is chaos and confusion.  I cannot control the world.

I can change my attitude and quit being a snob about money and valuing people based on how much they make.  I can also change my financial situation and my own attitude toward money and move from poverty consciousness to prosperity consciousness.

I can let go of delusions especially around thinking that I have control of all situations.  I can come down to earth and let go of false hopes.

I can let things go and accept that it is not all about me.  I can also accept that other people are sometimes slower than I am and that life gets complicated sometimes.

Knight of Wands (R)
I can let go of my ego and accept that not everyone has the same interests and skills that I do.  I need to look at the bigger picture and not be so selfish and all about my own self interests.
Card 7–How can I find my strength?
Five of Swords (R)
I put down my sword and quit being on the defensive all the time:  My strength is in vulnerability.  Additionally I can open myself up to change.
Card 8–How can I find my serenity?
Queen of Wands (R)
I can get organized and I can support and applaud other people.  I need to let go of my jealousy and competitive spirit.

BEAR Spread

I’ve been feeling a little out of sorts lately for a lot of reasons.  I’ve got a great new job, but I’m not traveling and I’m home doing a lot of administrative stuff until I get placed on a project.  It’s great getting paid, but I’m getting a little bored and am missing human interaction.  I’m also lonely because work provides a lot of my people interaction.  I generally travel four days a week, have intense interactions with people at work, and then I’m home for three days.  That normally suits me well, but I’ve been home for the better part of two months and I am bored, lonely, and a little depressed.

All of the above are contributing to my feelings, but I wanted to know if there was something else behind it so I created the BEAR spread.  BEAR is the acronym I use for how I deal with anger and other uncomfortable emotions.  It stands for:
  • Breathe–I take deep breaths, meditation, do whatever it takes to calm down so I’m rational and not out of my mind with anger.
  • Embrace--It’s all too easy for me to shame myself for having “negative” emotions like anger or fear so I remind myself that anger, rage, etc. are normal human emotions.
  • Analyze--Sometimes the reason for my anger is clear, but other times it takes a little digging to figure out what I’m really feeling.
  • Release–After I know what i’m feeling, I take time to release my feelings.  If I’m lonely I cry, if I’m angry at someone I might talk to them, or I might smash dishes to release my anger.
Since I wasn’t sure quite was bothering me, I decided to pull some cards to figure it out and I designed the BEAR spread.

The cards I pulled were all reversed, which in itself tells me that I have some analysis and self work to do.  None of them were overly bad, but all serve as a warning that I need to evaluate my emotions and figure things out.

The five of pentacles reversed is telling me that I need to come in from the cold.  The only way to solve the isolation and loneliness I’m feeling is to reach out to people.  There are resources available, but I have to choose to take advantage of them.  I get this card a lot so I think I really need to pay attention to it.
Card 2–Embrace (How can I embrace my feelings right now?)
Two of Pentacles (R)
I need to stop juggling the balls that are everyone else’s and focus on what is mine.  I need to set boundaries with my kids and hold them accountable.  I also have to put myself first sometimes which means not staying up until midnight when my son comes home from work.  If there is a problem, he will call me and my staying up is not going to do anything except make me exhausted.  I need to quit numbing myself with sugar and pay attention to what I eat and quit making excuses for eating garbage.
Card 3–Analyze (What am I really feeling? What is the real trigger?)
King of Pentacles (R)
The King of Pentacles reversed is telling me a lot.  He’s telling me that I’m wondering if my only value to people is what I bring to the table financially.  Do people really like me or is it what I can do for them?  And that ties back to my primary social outlet being work.  Another of the meanings is that I’m afraid of commitment and I don’t have people in my life because of my fear.  And this theme shows up in almost every reading I do.  I’m not thrilled, but my guess is that it will keep showing up until I do something about it.
Card 4–Release (How can I release my anger/sadness, etc. right now?)
Queen of Swords (R)
The Queen is telling me I’ve been letting my emotions rule and it is time to sit back and use my brain as well as my heart.  Yes I may feel lonely, but for me loneliness right now is a a choice because I am choosing not to go out and meet people.  I need to analyze and use my brain to come up with a solution.
Card 5–Outcome (what is the outcome?)

The Page is telling me that new friendships, relationships, etc. will not be handed to me.  I need to take the queens advice and use my brain to start planning outings where I will meet people.  I also have to quit using my job as an excuse because I’ve been home for eight weeks and still haven’t really ventured out much.
I’m not terribly thrilled with what these cards are telling me, but I realize that like all messages from the cards they are telling me that I am personally responsible and that it is within my power to change my life.  And maybe that’s not such a bad thing.

Another day that I didn’t journal.  Things must have been pretty intense or I wasn’t feeling well if I didn’t make time to journal.  Even though I didn’t know it when I pulled this card, I was at the beginning of a new adventure and creating my own life.

I was creating my exit from Chicago and in some ways the job i landed at itelligence came out of my putting it out there to the universe that I was ready to leave Chicago.  The Gods heard that and created a pathway for that to happen.  The one thing I don’t understand is why they have not yet created a pathway for love.  I have been pretty vocal about that being what I want to manifest in life, but it hasn’t happened yet.  I’m not sure why and I’m not sure what I would have to do to manifest it.

The only guidance they keep giving me is to be patient.  That is hard guidance for me to follow, but I know in my heart it is the right guidance and I know in my heart that it will work out.
